Job Description

A private client is seeking a reliable and resourceful Caretaker / Housekeeper to oversee the upkeep and day-to-day maintenance of a family’s second home near Deauville, Calvados, Normandy.

This varied position combines housekeeping, property maintenance and outdoor caretaking. The successful candidate will ensure that the residence remains clean, well maintained and secure throughout the year, with everything prepared for the owner’s arrival.

The role would suit a hands-on professional who enjoys working independently, takes pride in maintaining a property to a high standard and is equally comfortable caring for the interiors, managing practical repairs and looking after the surrounding grounds and animals. Independent staff accommodation is provided on site.

Responsibilities

Housekeeping and Household Support

Maintain the cleanliness, presentation and general upkeep of the residence
Prepare bedrooms and living areas ahead of the owner’s arrival
Manage laundry from washing and ironing through to folding and storage
Purchase groceries, household essentials and other supplies as required
Prepare breakfast and set the table when the owner is staying at the property
Receive deliveries and ensure parcels are handled appropriately

Property and Grounds Maintenance

Carry out minor repairs, DIY tasks and routine maintenance around the house
Maintain terraces, outdoor furniture and exterior living spaces
Look after the vegetable garden and ensure it remains in good condition
Maintain the tennis court and keep outdoor facilities presentable
Care for the henhouse, including feeding the hens and cleaning their enclosure
Assist with the general care of other animals on the property, including rabbits

Property Management and Security

Monitor the property’s condition and ensure the residence remains secure
Conduct routine checks of equipment and household systems
Identify faults, report issues to the owner and arrange repairs when necessary
Welcome external contractors, coordinate access and monitor their work
Maintain vehicle records, arrange servicing and oversee routine vehicle upkeep
Keep the owner informed about the property’s condition, maintenance requirements and any outstanding issues

Job Requirements

Minimum five years of experience in a similar caretaking, housekeeping or private property maintenance role
Fluent in French
Practical and versatile, with good DIY skills and the ability to undertake minor repairs
Autonomous and well organised, with the confidence to manage daily responsibilities without close supervision
Proactive, energetic and capable of anticipating maintenance needs
Comfortable working outdoors and caring for animals, including hens and rabbits
Reliable and attentive to detail, with a strong sense of responsibility for property security
Discreet and respectful of the owner’s privacy
Valid driving licence required

Working Conditions

Position: Caretaker / Housekeeper (M/F)
Location: Private residence near Deauville, Calvados, Normandy, France
Contract: Permanent employment contract (CDI)
Working hours: 35 hours per week, with the schedule to be agreed
Start date: November or December 2026
Accommodation: Independent staff accommodation provided

Salary

The position offers a gross monthly salary of €2,900.
