Governess

Governess job (M/F) in Abu Dhabi, UAE

Abu Dhabi

Job Description

A private family in Abu Dhabi is seeking an experienced, highly educated and nurturing Governess to oversee the educational development and day-to-day wellbeing of five children.

This is a long-term opportunity for an accomplished childcare and education professional who can combine strong academic support with warmth, structure and excellent interpersonal skills.

The Governess will become an important part of the children’s daily lives, helping them progress academically while encouraging independence, confidence, good manners and a genuine enthusiasm for learning.

The Family & Children

The family has five children:

  • Boy, 10 years old
  • Boy, 9 years old
  • Girl, 7 years old
  • Twin boys, 4 years old

All five children attend school and follow the British Curriculum.

The household is fully staffed, with nannies and other household employees already supporting the family’s daily routines. The Governess will work closely with the parents and existing team, with her primary responsibility being the children’s education, academic progress and personal development.

The older children are increasingly independent, while the four-year-old twins require more direct supervision, interaction and hands-on support.

The family also travels internationally during school holidays, and the Governess will be expected to accompany them when required.

Responsibilities

Education & Academic Support

  • Monitor and support each child’s academic progress
  • Assist with homework, reading, writing and mathematics
  • Provide support with examination preparation where appropriate
  • Help establish productive after-school study routines
  • Reinforce concepts covered at school and encourage strong learning habits
  • Create educational activities adapted to each child’s age and abilities
  • Encourage curiosity, independent thinking and a lasting enjoyment of learning

Personal Development

  • Encourage confidence, independence and personal responsibility
  • Promote respectful behaviour and excellent manners
  • Provide consistent guidance and age-appropriate boundaries
  • Offer emotional support and reassurance when needed
  • Recognise each child’s individual personality, interests and developmental needs
  • Encourage the children to pursue their hobbies and extracurricular interests

These include piano, violin, reading, mathematics, football, tennis, swimming, karting, arts and crafts, outdoor activities, educational games and travel.

Childcare & Daily Life

Although education is the central focus of the position, the successful candidate should also be comfortable taking an active role in the children’s daily routines.

Duties may include:

  • Supervising the children after school
  • Supporting daily routines and activities
  • Organising age-appropriate educational and recreational activities
  • Providing additional childcare support when required
  • Ensuring the children remain engaged, safe and well cared for
  • Working alongside the family’s nannies, maids and other household staff

The Governess should be someone who is naturally hands-on, observant and proactive, rather than limiting her role solely to academic tutoring.

Travel

The family travels internationally during school holidays. The Governess must therefore be comfortable travelling with the family and adapting to different environments and schedules.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate will offer:

  • British or European passport – required
  • Native or near-native English
  • Previous experience working as a Governess for private families – essential
  • Proven experience with children following the British Curriculum
  • A degree in Education, Child Development, Psychology or a related discipline is highly desirable
  • Strong academic and teaching capabilities
  • Experience supporting homework, literacy, mathematics and examination preparation
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A warm, patient and naturally nurturing personality
  • The ability to combine high academic standards with an encouraging approach
  • Excellent organisation and time-management skills
  • Discretion and a thorough understanding of private household confidentiality
  • The ability to integrate effectively into a fully staffed private residence
  • A flexible and proactive approach to childcare
  • Willingness to travel internationally with the family
  • Non-smoker
  • Clean police clearance
  • Excellent, verifiable references

First Aid certification would be an advantage.

Working Conditions

  • Position: Governess
  • Location: Abu Dhabi, UAE
  • Contract: Full-time
  • Accommodation: Private accommodation provided by the family
  • Schedule: 6 days per week, with 1 full day off
  • Start: As soon as possible

Typical Schedule

During school term, the children are generally at school during the day, with working hours typically around 3:30 PM to 8:00 PM.

During weekends, public holidays and school holidays, greater flexibility is required. Working hours may increase according to the family’s schedule, children’s activities and travel arrangements.

The successful candidate must be comfortable adapting her schedule when required, particularly during school holidays and international travel.

Package

  • Exceptional candidates may be considered for a higher package
  • UAE employment visa
  • Medical insurance
  • One annual return flight to the candidate’s home country
  • Flight provided for successful candidates relocating from overseas
  • Paid annual leave, to be taken during the school term and outside the family’s summer holiday period
  • Private accommodation provided
