Nanny/Governess

Nanny/Governess job (M/F) in Lancaster Gate, London, United Kingdom

London

Job Description

A welcoming French family who have recently settled in London are looking for an engaging, experienced After-School Nanny or Governess to support the development of their five-year-old son.

The family comprises a busy executive father and a bright, cheerful and well-mannered young boy who attends the French Lycée in South Kensington. Full of energy and curiosity, he enjoys swimming, boxing and a variety of sporting activities.

The primary focus of this position is to strengthen the child’s English language skills through daily immersion, while encouraging his intellectual, emotional and social development. The successful candidate will communicate with him exclusively in English, creating natural opportunities to improve his vocabulary, reading skills and conversational confidence.

The family is seeking a warm yet confident childcare professional who understands early childhood development, encourages an active lifestyle and provides clear, consistent boundaries. Someone who can combine educational support with outdoor adventures, sports and creative play will be particularly well suited to this role.

Responsibilities

Childcare, education and development

  • School collection and transportation: Collect the child from his school in South Kensington at 16:30 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and at 13:00 on Wednesdays. Accompany him home to the family residence in Lancaster Gate or transport him safely to extracurricular activities.
  • English language development: Maintain an English-speaking environment throughout the day, helping the child develop his spoken fluency, vocabulary, reading ability and confidence through everyday conversations and age-appropriate learning.
  • Sports and outdoor activities: Plan an engaging programme of physical activities, including swimming, boxing sessions, outdoor play and other sports suited to his interests and abilities.
  • Educational and creative play: Introduce stimulating games, reading sessions, creative projects and developmental activities that nurture curiosity, independence and social skills.
  • Social development: Arrange playdates and suitable outings, encouraging positive interactions, good manners and confidence in different social settings.
  • Afternoon and evening care: Prepare nutritious snacks and simple meals, oversee the transition from school to home and establish a calm evening routine. Assist with bedtime when the father’s professional commitments require it.
  • Child-related organisation: Keep the child’s bedroom, belongings and wardrobe orderly, coordinating with the family’s housekeeper regarding laundry and general room maintenance.

Light personal assistance and administration

Approximately 10% of the role may involve occasional household administration, including:

  • Coordinating the child’s extracurricular timetable and appointments.
  • Making bookings and handling relevant telephone calls.
  • Receiving deliveries and assisting with straightforward organisational tasks.

Job Requirements

  • Excellent English proficiency: Fluent English is essential to provide consistent language immersion. French language skills would be advantageous but are not required.
  • Strong childcare background: Previous experience as a nanny, governess or childcare professional, ideally supporting young children within private households.
  • Knowledge of child development: An understanding of early-years education, child psychology and age-appropriate developmental approaches.
  • Active and enthusiastic personality: A genuine interest in sports, swimming, outdoor activities and creative engagement with young children.
  • Confident and nurturing approach: Able to establish appropriate boundaries while maintaining a positive, encouraging and supportive relationship with the child.
  • Excellent organisational skills: Capable of managing school collections, activities, meals and daily routines independently.
  • Professionalism and discretion: Respectful of family privacy, dependable and comfortable working in a private household.
  • Flexibility: Available for occasional evening babysitting and additional weekend hours by prior agreement.
  • Background checks and eligibility: Strong, verifiable professional references, a satisfactory DBS check and valid authorisation to work in the UK.

Working Conditions

  • Location: Lancaster Gate, London, with school collection in South Kensington.
  • Schedule: Approximately 25–30 hours per week.
    • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: from 16:30 until approximately 20:00–21:00.
    • Wednesday: from 13:00 until approximately 21:00.
  • Guaranteed hours: 25–30 hours per week, with additional hours potentially available for babysitting and agreed administrative duties.
  • Accommodation: Live-out position.
  • Contract: Employed or self-employed arrangement, subject to the applicable UK employment and tax rules.
  • Start date: As soon as possible, ideally within the next two to three weeks.
  • Trials: Immediate trials available for suitable candidates.
  • Additional availability: Occasional evening and weekend work by mutual agreement.

Salary

£25–£30 gross per hour, depending on qualifications, experience and suitability.
