Family Assistant/Nanny

Nanny/Family Assistant job (M/F) in Reno, Nevada, USA

Reno

Job Description

A private family living near Reno, Nevada, is seeking a dedicated, experienced and versatile Nanny / Family Assistant to join their household on a long-term basis.

The family has three children: twin 12-year-old boys and a three-year-old. While the older boys are generally at school during the day, the successful candidate will take primary responsibility for the youngest child’s care and development. They must also be confident managing all three children together or providing individual care as family schedules and circumstances require.

This is a multifaceted role combining hands-on childcare with practical family assistance and household support. The family already has an established team, including another nanny and security personnel, and is recruiting a housekeeper. The successful candidate will therefore need to collaborate effectively with colleagues, communicate well and be willing to contribute wherever additional help is needed.

The ideal professional is energetic, resourceful and adaptable, with a genuine team-oriented mindset and a willingness to go beyond traditional childcare responsibilities. Previous experience in a private household, excellent employment longevity and the ability to work within a structured family environment will be highly valued.

Working schedule and rota

The position follows a 10-days-on / 9-days-off rota, offering nine consecutive days entirely free from work after each working period.

During the 10-day on-duty period, the candidate will generally live at the family residence and provide comprehensive support around the clock. On occasion, the working period may be arranged on a live-out basis, depending on the household’s staffing requirements.

Overnight responsibility is included throughout the on-duty period. The nanny will sleep with a baby monitor to respond if the three-year-old requires assistance; the child typically sleeps through the night.

Flexibility is essential, particularly when the family travels or when schedules and household requirements change. The candidate must be comfortable adapting their duties and working arrangements as necessary.

Compensation remains consistent throughout the year, irrespective of variations in the family’s day-to-day schedule.

Responsibilities

Childcare and daily routines

  • Provide attentive, nurturing and developmentally appropriate care, with the three-year-old as the primary focus.
  • Work alongside the existing nanny to ensure continuity of care and a consistent approach to the children’s routines.
  • Take sole charge of one or more children when required, adapting to the family’s schedule and individual needs.
  • Manage morning preparations, after-school activities, mealtimes, evening routines and bedtime.
  • Plan stimulating activities, playdates and outings that encourage the youngest child’s learning, independence and development.
  • Prepare nutritious snacks and simple meals for the children and, when needed, other family members.
  • Provide overnight supervision during all scheduled working periods.
  • Maintain a safe, organised and engaging environment for the children.

Family assistance and household support

  • Manage children’s laundry and assist with family laundry as required.
  • Keep the children’s wardrobes organised, ensuring clothing is appropriately sized, seasonally suitable and ready for use.
  • Maintain tidy and well-organised children’s bedrooms, play areas and shared spaces.
  • Pack and unpack luggage for the children and assist with preparing the family for trips.
  • Run household errands, purchase supplies and assist with shopping as requested.
  • Provide occasional driving for the children or family-related errands when necessary.
  • Support the organisation and logistics of family travel, including domestic and international trips.
  • Assist with reasonable additional household tasks when the family or wider team requires support.
  • Maintain a proactive, hands-on approach to everyday responsibilities and identify areas where assistance would be beneficial.

Deep cleaning is not required, as a dedicated team attends the property weekly. However, the candidate must be comfortable maintaining everyday order and contributing to the smooth running of the household.

Teamwork and household coordination

  • Coordinate closely with the other nanny and communicate relevant information regarding the children’s routines and requirements.
  • Work constructively with the housekeeper, security personnel and other household staff.
  • Follow the family’s established procedures, preferences and standards of conduct.
  • Respond positively to feedback and adjust working methods to suit the family’s expectations.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and exercise sound judgement when handling sensitive family matters.

Job Requirements

The family is looking for a mature and dependable professional who combines excellent childcare skills with flexibility, discretion and a strong work ethic.

Essential requirements include:

  • Professional childcare experience: A minimum of five years working with the same family in a private household, demonstrating reliability and a strong record of employment longevity.
  • Rota or live-in experience: Previous experience in a live-in, rotational or similarly intensive household position is strongly preferred.
  • Early childhood expertise: Confidence caring for a lively three-year-old, with the energy and patience to support the child’s daily activities and development.
  • Flexible approach: Willingness to combine childcare with family assistance and practical household duties without being overly restrictive about responsibilities.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work harmoniously alongside other household employees and contribute positively to a well-established team.
  • Initiative: A self-motivated approach, with the ability to anticipate needs, solve problems and act appropriately without constant direction.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable with changing schedules, travel requirements and the evolving priorities of a busy private household.
  • Professional discretion: Strong respect for privacy and confidentiality, including willingness to sign a non-disclosure agreement.
  • Emotional intelligence: Able to recognise household dynamics, communicate appropriately and maintain clear professional boundaries.
  • Organisation: Excellent planning skills and the ability to manage competing priorities efficiently.
  • Driving: Valid driving licence, confident driving skills and a clean driving record.
  • Travel readiness: Willingness to accompany the family on domestic and international trips, with a valid passport.
  • Work authorisation: Legal authorisation to work in the United States.
  • Safety qualifications: Current First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • References: Excellent, verifiable professional references.

Previous experience in a formal private household is advantageous but not essential. Candidates from other high-standard domestic environments will also be considered if they demonstrate the necessary professionalism, adaptability and discretion.

A formal childcare qualification or university degree is not required.
