Caretaker/Gardener

Caretaker/Gardener job (M/F) in Paris, France

Paris

Job Description

A private family is seeking an experienced and self-sufficient Caretaker / Gardener (M/F) to look after its second home and surrounding grounds in the Brie region of Seine-et-Marne (77), less than an hour from Paris.

This varied, hands-on position combines gardening, general property maintenance, animal care, and estate security. The successful candidate will be responsible for preserving the property’s grounds, monitoring the condition of its buildings and equipment, and ensuring that the estate remains safe, functional, and well maintained throughout the year.

The role also includes caring for the vegetable garden, fruit trees, woodland, riverbanks, and poultry, alongside carrying out minor repairs and coordinating external contractors when necessary. The caretaker will act as the owner’s trusted on-site contact, keeping them informed of maintenance requirements, completed work, and any issues that arise.

We are looking for a resourceful and dependable professional who enjoys working outdoors, possesses strong practical skills, and can organise their workload independently. A permanent position is available from April 2027, with independent accommodation provided directly on the property.

Responsibilities

Garden and Grounds Maintenance

  • Maintain the estate’s gardens and outdoor spaces throughout the seasons, including mowing, pruning, trimming, weeding, watering, raking, and clearing fallen leaves.
  • Manage the vegetable garden, from sowing and planting to harvesting, watering, and preparing the beds for winter.
  • Look after fruit trees, including seasonal pruning and appropriate cutting.
  • Maintain pathways, the surroundings of the mill, and planted containers throughout the property.
  • Monitor and maintain woodland areas and riverbanks, keeping access routes clear and addressing potential safety hazards.
  • Prepare and store firewood, including cutting and stacking logs as required.
  • Ensure that the grounds remain tidy, accessible, and in keeping with the character of the estate.

Animal Care

  • Look after the property’s hens, ensuring they are fed and their enclosure is kept clean.
  • Monitor the health and general wellbeing of the animals, including the resident cat.
  • Arrange veterinary assistance when necessary and inform the owner of any concerns.
  • Ensure animals have appropriate care and that their living areas remain clean and secure.

Property and Equipment Maintenance

  • Carry out routine inspections of the property’s buildings, identifying issues involving plumbing, gutters, and other structural or operational elements.
  • Perform minor repairs, general DIY tasks, and basic maintenance work as required.
  • Monitor essential installations, including the septic system, heating equipment, water softener, fire extinguishers, and smoke detectors.
  • Ensure gardening tools, machinery, and other estate equipment remain operational and are maintained appropriately.
  • Identify faults, arrange servicing when authorised, and promptly report significant issues to the owner.
  • Keep the service vehicle in good condition, coordinating maintenance and ensuring its service records remain up to date.
  • Maintain a practical and organised approach to preventative maintenance to minimise avoidable problems.

Estate Supervision and Coordination

  • Monitor the property’s security and remain attentive to any unusual activity or potential risks.
  • Receive parcels, deliveries, and supplies on behalf of the owner.
  • Welcome contractors and tradespeople, facilitate access, and monitor the progress and quality of their work.
  • Communicate maintenance requirements and report completed tasks, incidents, and outstanding issues to the owner.
  • Provide regular updates on the condition of the estate, its equipment, grounds, and animals.
  • Maintain the property responsibly while respecting the owner’s privacy and confidentiality.

Job Requirements

  • At least five years of relevant professional experience in estate caretaking, gardening, property maintenance, or a comparable role.
  • Technical or vocational training in gardening, landscaping, maintenance, or a related trade would be an advantage.
  • Strong practical abilities in gardening, groundskeeping, and general DIY.
  • Comfortable carrying out a broad range of outdoor and property maintenance tasks throughout the year.
  • Able to work autonomously, organise daily responsibilities, and anticipate maintenance needs.
  • Resourceful, proactive, versatile, and attentive to detail.
  • Comfortable caring for domestic animals, including poultry and cats.
  • Able to identify equipment faults and determine when specialist intervention is required.
  • Fluent in French, with the ability to communicate clearly with the owner and external contractors.
  • Valid driving licence required.
  • Absolute discretion and respect for the family’s privacy and property.

The ideal candidate will be a trustworthy and practical professional who takes pride in maintaining a private estate and enjoys the variety of responsibilities involved in looking after both its grounds and buildings.
