Job Description

A private client is seeking an experienced and versatile Factotum to look after a second residence located in the countryside near Aurillac, Cantal (15). The successful candidate will take responsibility for the day-to-day upkeep of the château, its grounds, equipment and animals, ensuring the property remains safe, well maintained and fully operational.

This is a hands-on role requiring someone practical, independent and comfortable managing a wide variety of tasks. Accommodation in a private three-bedroom house is provided on the estate.

The position is available as soon as possible and is offered on a permanent, full-time basis.

Responsibilities

Property & Grounds Maintenance

  • Keep the interior areas of the château clean, orderly and well maintained.
  • Maintain the surrounding grounds, including mowing, raking, watering, collecting leaves and keeping paths and outdoor areas tidy.
  • Look after the vegetable garden and ensure it remains properly maintained throughout the seasons.
  • Prepare, cut and stack firewood as required.
  • Carry out routine DIY, minor repairs and general property maintenance.

Animals & Outdoor Areas

  • Provide daily care for the animals on the estate, including chickens, ducks and birds.
  • Monitor feed levels, organise supplies and place orders when necessary.
  • Maintain animal enclosures and ensure they remain clean and secure.
  • Arrange veterinary appointments and assist with related practical matters.
  • Be completely comfortable around birds, including those that move freely through one room of the château.

Equipment & Estate Operations

  • Monitor essential property systems and equipment, including the borehole/drilling installation and boiler.
  • Ensure garden and maintenance machinery is kept in good working order.
  • Identify faults or maintenance issues promptly and report them to the owner.
  • Welcome tradespeople, contractors and service providers to the property and supervise their work when required.
  • Receive deliveries and parcels on behalf of the household.
  • Help maintain the overall security and good order of the estate.

Communication

  • Provide regular updates to the owner regarding the condition of the property, equipment and grounds.
  • Flag any repairs, malfunctions or issues requiring professional intervention.
  • Maintain complete confidentiality and discretion concerning the client and property.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years’ experience in a comparable estate, private property or factotum position.

You should be:

  • Practical, hands-on and confident managing a broad range of maintenance tasks.
  • Experienced with general DIY and basic property repairs.
  • Comfortable working independently and taking initiative.
  • Organised, dependable and capable of prioritising tasks effectively.
  • Experienced or comfortable caring for domestic and farm animals.
  • Unafraid of birds and happy working in an environment where some birds have free access to part of the house.
  • Physically active and comfortable working both indoors and outdoors.
  • Able to communicate in French and/or English.
  • In possession of a valid driving licence.
  • Discreet and committed to maintaining strict confidentiality.

Salary

€2,310 gross per month, depending on experience and profile
