Job Description

A remarkable Historic Monument estate situated in the countryside near Limoges. The owners are seeking an experienced Estate Manager / Gardener to assume responsibility for the stewardship, maintenance, and presentation of this unique property.

Spanning approximately 12 hectares, the estate combines heritage architecture with diverse landscapes, including a traditional French formal garden.

This position offers the chance to work in a rare environment where horticulture, biodiversity, and historic preservation come together.

The successful candidate will report directly to the owners and act as the principal caretaker of the estate, ensuring that both the grounds and technical infrastructure are maintained to the highest standards throughout the year.

Responsibilities

Garden & Landscape Management

  • Oversee the maintenance and enhancement of all landscaped and natural areas across the estate.
  • Carry out planting, watering, mowing, pruning, brush clearing, and general horticultural work.
  • Prepare soils, monitor plant health, and contribute to the long-term development of the gardens.
  • Apply environmentally responsible gardening practices that promote biodiversity and ecological balance.

Estate Maintenance & Coordination

  • Manage relationships with specialist contractors involved in forestry, arboriculture, and pond maintenance.
  • Coordinate scheduled maintenance works and monitor their execution.
  • Ensure the estate remains attractive, safe, and fully operational at all times.

Technical Oversight

  • Monitor the operation and maintenance of essential property systems, including heating equipment, water installations, septic systems, and electrical infrastructure.
  • Identify maintenance requirements and coordinate repairs when necessary.

Security & Visitor Support

  • Conduct routine inspections of the property and oversee security procedures, including alarm monitoring.
  • Welcome visitors during public heritage events and open days.
  • Assist with the organisation and smooth running of seminars and special events held on the estate during the summer season.
  • Provide occasional driving assistance when requested by the owners.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum of five years’ experience managing gardens, estates, parks, or environmentally focused landscapes.
  • Strong practical gardening and horticultural skills with a genuine interest in ecological land management.
  • Able to work independently while taking full ownership of a wide range of responsibilities.
  • Comfortable carrying out minor maintenance tasks in addition to gardening duties.
  • Organised and detail-oriented, with the ability to provide regular reports to the owners.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Professional presentation, strong service ethic, and impeccable discretion.
  • Valid driving licence required.

Working Conditions

  • Position: Estate Manager / Gardener
  • Location: Near Limoges, Haute-Vienne (87), France
  • Contract Type: Permanent (CDI), full-time
  • Accommodation: Live-in accommodation provided on the estate
  • Start Date: Early July
  • Working Pattern: Flexibility required during owners’ visits and selected weekends

Salary

€2,100 to €2,600 net per month, depending on experience and qualifications.
